IBM recently announced the final decision to stop selling AIX DCE. In parallel they announced the end of support date for it.
Extract from the official IBM communication:
Effective April 27, 2007, IBM will withdraw from marketing part numbers for Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) listed in the Part number withdrawals section and licensed under the IBM International Program License Agreement. On or after these dates, you can no longer obtain these programs directly from IBM. You can obtain these programs on an as-available basis through IBM Remarketers.
Effective April 30, 2008, IBM will withdraw standard support for the programs listed in the Program withdrawals section and licensed under the IBM International Program License Agreement.
Software withdrawal and changes in support : IBM Distributed Computing Environment - Replacements available.
To summarize, end of marketing (= end of selling) will occur April 27, 2007, followed by end of support on April 30, 2008.
If you are managing IBM AIX systems with components of HP Operations Center (namely HP OpenView Operations and Performance Agent products), this announcement might have an impact on you:
The Operations DCE agents on AIX requires as prerequisite the AIX DCE software to be installed and running. Performance agents could also be configured to rely on AIX DCE (rep_server datacomm). If you are already using the https agents on AIX, you will not be impacted by this announcement.
If you are affected, we recommend the following contingency plan:
Operations for UNIX 8.x, Performance Agent 4.5/4.6 customers still using AIX DCE agents or communication:
- These products offer the choice of using DCE or https as communication protocol. We recommend the earliest possible migration of the AIX DCE agents to AIX https agents. For the Performance Agents we recommend the configuration of the agents to rely on the 4.x http(s) datacomm facility. Please keep in mind the already earlier announced end of support date of December 31, 2007 for the Operations for Unix DCE agents when planning the actual migration.
- Please make sure that you acquire the required number of AIX DCE licenses from IBM or IBM Remarketers before April 27, 2007 to be able to manage your AIX environment until you can perform the https migration. After that date, no incremental AIX DCE licenses can be obtained.
Operations for UNIX 7.x, Performance Agents 3.x/4.0:
- For these products, newer versions offering https communication are available. We recommend migrating to the latest version of Operations for UNIX and Performance Agent while in parallel switching to https communication protocol. Please keep in mind that Operations for Unix 7.x will reach end of support already end of 2007 as announced earlier.
- Please make sure that you acquire the required number of AIX DCE licenses from IBM or IBM Remarketers before April 27, 2007 to be able to manage your AIX environment until you can perform the https migration. After that date, no incremental AIX DCE licenses can be obtained.
Operations for Windows customers:
- Operations for Windows plans to add https communication (https agent) with is next version 8.0. This version is planned to become publicly available in Q3 CY2007 (English version), followed by localized version in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean about 90 days later.
- Until Operations for Windows 8.0 becomes available, we recommend that you acquire the required number of AIX DCE licenses from IBM or IBM Remarketers before April 27, 2007 to be able to manage your AIX environment until you can perform the https migration.
- In addition, please plan the migration to Operations for Windows 8.0 and https communication latest by April 30, 2008 when the AIX DCE will reach end of support.
